old but its still news... VANDALS ATTACK HARRY POTTER TRAINVandals targeted the carriage used in the famous films Vandals have caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to a railway carriage used in the Harry Potter films. The carriage is pulled by the Olton Hall steam engine, otherwise known as the Hogwarts Express in the Potter films. A spokesman for British Transport Police said the carriage was daubed with silver spray paint. "It is extensively damaged and has been 'tagged' with symbols. The cost has been estimated at between £2,000 and £3,000," the spokesman said. "We are appealing for witnesses but as it occurred overnight there may not have been too many people about." Police said the vandals broke into the depot in Scarborough and attacked the carriage during the weekend. The historic steam engine was not stored at the depot, the spokesman added. The Olton Hall train is used in the summer months by tourists travelling between Scarborough and York. I would also give them a bottle of turps and I wouldn't let them leave until they have cleaned it James Shuttleworth of the company which runs the train It is hired out to Warner Bros for the Potter films and was used in the film Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets. James Shuttleworth, chief operations officer for West Coast Railway Company which runs the train, said two coaches had been damaged. He said: "It is just mindless vandalism. I don't think they were targeting Harry Potter. "I would like to get hold of them and ask them why they did it, what have they gained from it? I would also give them a bottle of turps and I wouldn't let them leave until they have cleaned it. "I am very angry about what has happened. These coaches will have to go back to the workshop, get cleaned up and be repainted. It is incredibly frustrating." Mr Shuttleworth said the steam engine and coaches were used in the two films already released and the train was due to make another appearance in the third film which is currently in production.

not reallt news..but its knowledge
What is the British Transport Police? BTP is the national police service for Britain's railways. It also polices the London Underground, Docklands Light Railway and tram systems in the West Midlands and Croydon.
Policing the railways is a specialist job. BTP officers are selected, trained and equipped like those in local forces, but they also receive training in specialist railway legislation as well as operating and safety procedures. They help protect a moving population of almost six million rail users as well as 130,000 rail staff and businesses.
The crime mix that BTP deals with differs from that of local forces. Domestic burglary and road traffic offences are a significant part of police workload but not the BTP for obvious reasons. The crimes they deal with are mostly theft - pickpocketing, luggage theft for example - car park crime and the usual assaults, drugs and sexual offences, public order and similar crimes.
Route crime - which is vandalism, obstructing trains, throwing missiles and endangering safety - is an area in which BTP specialises. They have also got specialists in countering the terrorist threat, policing travelling sports fans and graffiti.
How does it fight crime? As BTP is thinly spread across the country, two key principles underpin its policing. Firstly, it is intelligence led. This means officers are deployed where they are most needed based on an analysis of crime patterns and intelligence. For instance, there aren't enough officers to police every train carrying football supporters, so officers police those seen to most at risk, based on intelligence. Similarly, route crime or robbery 'hotspots' are targeted to catch or deter offenders.
The second principle is that of partnership. BTP has to work very closely with local forces, train operators and other agencies to be effective.
BTP has no armed officers, but otherwise has the full range of police capability. There are CID officers around the country and specialist squads to counter robbery, graffiti, sexual offences, fraud and other areas of crime. Dog handlers undertake public order, drugs and explosives search duties and there are trained Police Support Units for major public order situations. Most officers are front line uniform staff based at one of 90 police stations across the country.
What's the history? The force can trace its history back to 1825, but essentially it began with the formation of the first 'Railway Police' shortly after the opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway in 1830. Each railway company recruited its own constabulary, but with the unification of the railways in 1949 came the formation of the British Transport Commission Police. In 1962, the name was changed to The British Transport Police.
